What a fine review. I think there could be an error given the highlight of the year could be Embrace at Ally Pally, but here's some of my highs and lows!
Hard sounds and High Notes
Hard Fi get to the top of my Best Newcomer list. Top venue, top sounds, top band, top tunes and a mental lead singer - they couldn't be beaten!
Stop the music!! And there was no drink - I should move my score into incredible territory!
I didn't see Kasabian or the cover band in Verbier, so can't comment, but if anyone wants to tell me how good they both were, please do. Although, only Phil knows how I feel when I say that being told how good a band is after you missed them is very very very very very very very very very very very boring zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
The Sun sets better in Somerset
Somerset House is THE legendary venue and Doves ruled there. I think the snackbite and black helped enormously but at least tall guy wasn't there this time around. You can read the brilliant review here ..."
The Barrel Scraper
For me, The Bravery let themselves down. They were not Brave at all and were busy (to quote The Allen) being a band they weren't. They'd have done Joey Tribbiani proud. Wankers.
Coming up in 2006
2006 should be a year of foreign tours, new bands and some revisits of the good ones. If I don't see either Hard-Fi or The Killers, I'll be gutted. I'm devastated already that I didn't get Take That tickets, so I can't let these slip me by.
Finally, I think we should get something in for Wembley Stadium - it's new, it's big, it's got to be had!!
New Years Resolutions
Introducing a new, improved, personal developmental approach to our site, I have two resolutions to make to the Gig Guiders for 2006:
1. I will not get tickets for bands that I can't see.
I've just missed too many this year and I've missed some crackers - 2006 will not be the year of the blow out!!
2. I will make more updates to the blog
I read this again after a short (ish!) gap and I have to say that it really is F...F...Franzin fackin no medals snackbite entertainment brilliant!! Get it in for 2006!!
Finally, it's been another fantastic year of highs, lows, drunkedness, sobriety, jumping, standing and good all round marvellousness! Thanks to all of you for making it so super - if there were all the bands in the world, they wouldn't be as good without the gig guiders!!
Rock on 2006!!
It's not until you get to the end of the year that you realise how many gigs are NOT on the blog that we've been too. Number one rule for next year is to update the blog after every gig!
Following Pete's format then...
1. Best New Comer Gig - GUTTED I didn;t see Hard Fi at Cambridge as sounds like that would have been the winner. So, for me, toss up between Razorlight and Kasabian. Gonner go Kasabian here as they are my BA First Class best mates as well. BLINDING gig at The Palace and looking forward to new material in 2006.
2. Best Venue - Somerset House does indeed rock. Doves on 6 pints of snakebite as Mark points out in his update, does indeed make the night go....not sure where though. Special shout for Alexandra Palace though. Came good at the end of this year.
3. Most Hammered (or generally off my tits) gig - Kasabian at Alley Pally
4. Best Oldie gig - Weller at The Palace
5. Best festival - BBC Three coverage of Glasto
6. Best Chuff at Gigs - Weller
7. Best "Supergroup" Gig - Oasis at Knebworth. Very very impressed with the venue but Oasis were amazing. Considering it was my 4th Oasis gig, they still blew me away. Good on you boys.
8. Best perfomance in 2005 - Razorlight
9. Most disappointing gig - The Bravery were proper shit. Enough said
10. Biggest twat at a gig - those 15 year old spilling my beer at Franz Ferdinand. Twats indeed
11. So to 2006 - who should we see - Hard Fi and Killers. I have tickets for Take That @ Wembley Stadium in June which will be a good crack.
12. Best New Gig Buddy - my wife of course. Kirsty's been to 4 gigs this year (Coldplay, Oasis, Franz, Embrace + Verbier) which is a bloody good shout. Perhaps we'll see Vicky House a bit more next year as long as she doesn't complain about the state of the floor at the gigs!!!
Merry Christmas all and see you in 2006
